Why?
Dementia is a growing global health crisis, and early detection is critical to effective treatment. The clock-drawing test is one of the most widely used screening tools for mild cognitive impairment, but it has a weakness: scoring is inconsistent and highly subjective, especially among non-expert raters. Past attempts to digitize the test relied on dedicated camera rigs and proprietary styluses — accurate, but far too expensive and impractical to scale.
How?
MindScribe reimagines the test on hardware people already own. By running it on an iPad with Apple Pencil, we eliminate the need for specialized equipment while retaining precise stroke, timing, and motion data. Pairing this with an on-device classifier removes the human rater entirely, replacing subjective scoring with a fast, consistent, automated one.
What?
An iPad app that administers the digital clock-drawing test via Apple Pencil, capturing pen strokes and hand movements with the same fidelity as dedicated hardware. An image classification model, trained from scratch, screens each drawing for anomalies associated with mild cognitive impairment, which means that no clinician interpretation is required. The result is a scalable, objective screening tool built entirely on off-the-shelf technology.
